How to Draw a Small House

A square wall, a triangle on top, then a door and one window. The door has to fit on the wall with space around it. The chimney, if you add one, sits on the roof, not beside the house.

Materials Pencil, paper, eraser. A black pen is optional once the square and triangle agree with each other.

Step 1

Draw the wall as a square or a rectangle that is a bit wider than it is tall. Leave room above it for the roof.

Step 2

Add a triangle roof. The eaves can stick out past the walls a little. The peak should sit near the middle of the wall, not over a corner.

Step 3

Add a door rectangle that touches the bottom of the wall, and a window square in the upper half. Split the window with one vertical and one horizontal line.

Step 4

Add a small chimney on the slope, as a rectangle that crosses the roof line. Erase the bit of roof that runs through the chimney so the chimney sits in front.

Step 5

Darken the outline. Add a ground line wider than the house. Check that the door is narrower than the wall and that the chimney still meets the roof.

Finished

The finished house is still the square and the triangle. The door, window, and chimney are smaller shapes placed on them.

A common miss

A door as wide as the wall leaves no wall. Leave a margin on both sides, and keep the door touching the ground line.

One variation

Draw the same house twice more, smaller, on the same ground line. Shared ground, separate roofs. That is the small street, using this house as the unit.
