How to Draw an Easy Cloud

A cloud on this desk has a flat bottom and a bumpy top. The bumps are different sizes. Equal bumps in a row start to look like a caterpillar.

Materials Pencil, paper, eraser. A black pen is optional after the bottom is flat and the bumps are joined.

Step 1

Lightly draw a horizontal line. This is the bottom of the cloud. It is a guide, and most of it will be replaced by a cleaner line.

Step 2

Add three bumps that rest on the line. Make the middle bump the tallest. The left and right bumps should not match each other exactly.

Step 3

Connect the bumps into one upper outline. Where a bump crossed its neighbor, keep the outer path and erase the inner scratch. The bottom is still the straight guide.

Step 4

Replace the dashed guide with one solid bottom line from the left bump to the right bump. Erase any bump that dangled below that line. The cloud is now a single closed shape.

Finished

The finished cloud is flat underneath and uneven on top. Three bumps are still visible, and they are not the same height.

A common miss

Five identical humps. Stop at three, and let the middle one win. If you want rain, add it after this shape exists: short marks under the flat bottom, not more bumps.

One variation

Hang four short vertical lines under the bottom edge. That is the rain cloud from the idea list. The cloud construction does not change.
