How to Draw a Simple Apple

An apple is a circle until the top dents in and a stem comes out of that dent. The leaf is optional and small. Do not start with the leaf.

Materials Pencil, paper, eraser. A black pen is optional for the stem and leaf.

Step 1

Draw a circle. It can be slightly taller than it is wide. Leave a little paper above it for the stem.

Step 2

Add a shallow curve at the top, dipping into the circle, and a short stem rising from the middle of that dip. The stem comes out of the top, not the side.

Step 3

Add one leaf beside the stem. It is a small pointed oval. One side can be a little flatter where it meets the stem.

Step 4

Erase the part of the circle that ran across the dent, so the outline dips in and the stem sits in the valley. A light curve on the shoulder is optional. If it looks like a stripe, erase it.

Finished

The finished apple is the circle with a bite taken out of the top by a curve, a stem in that curve, and one leaf.

A common miss

A stem glued to the side of the circle. If the stem is not coming out of the top dent, move it. The dent and the stem are the same event.

One variation

Take a crescent out of the right side with one curve, as if someone bit it. Keep the stem where it is. Do not add teeth marks.
